A British Overseas Territory, this island group lies southeast of the Bahamas and includes around 40 low-lying islands. Among them, Grand Turk is the second most populated, despite covering just seven square miles. The earliest known settlers were the Arawak-speaking Taino, believed to have traded salt, naturally formed as seawater collected in shallow inland ponds and evaporated under the sun. In the late 1600s, British colonists from Bermuda arrived to harvest the salt and altered the process. Remnants of the original low stone walls used to divide salt pans can still be seen across the islands, particularly at the Salt House Museum beside Town Salina.

The first European settlers here were Dutch, and they built the five-pointed, star-shaped Fort Shoonenborch in 1649 after being defeated by local people and the Portuguese. In 1654, the Dutch left, and the fort was renamed Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção; the area around it was to grow into Brazil’s fifth largest city. The citadel itself remains, its low-rise whitewashed walls adorned with cannons and palm trees.
